About SS-31 (Elamipretide)

SS-31, also known as Elamipretide, is a mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide that concentrates in the inner mitochondrial membrane, where it stabilizes cardiolipin and reduces mitochondrial reactive oxygen species. It has reached human Phase 2/3 trials (Barth syndrome, primary mitochondrial myopathy, heart failure), but the pivotal trials — including the Phase 3 MMPOWER-3 — largely did not meet their primary endpoints, and it is not approved. The longevity/anti-aging use is an extrapolation from its mechanism, not a proven human outcome.

Key Benefits

  • Targets inner mitochondrial membrane directly
  • Stabilizes cardiolipin structure
  • Reduces mitochondrial ROS production
  • Improves electron transport chain efficiency
