How to Store and Handle Peptides Properly

Proper storage is critical for peptide stability. Learn how to store, reconstitute, and handle research peptides.

Why Storage Matters

Peptides are biological molecules that degrade when exposed to heat, light, moisture, and bacterial contamination. Proper storage is the difference between a peptide that works as expected and one that has lost its biological activity.

Lyophilized (Freeze-Dried) Peptides

Most peptides arrive as a lyophilized powder — a dry, fluffy cake or powder in a sealed vial.

Storage Rules for Lyophilized Peptides

  • Short-term (weeks): Refrigerate at 2–8°C (standard refrigerator)
  • Long-term (months): Freeze at -20°C or below
  • Keep sealed until ready to reconstitute
  • Protect from light — store in the original vial or wrap in foil
  • Avoid repeated freeze-thaw cycles of the powder

A properly stored lyophilized peptide can remain stable for 12+ months.

Reconstituted Peptides

Once you add bacteriostatic water (BAC water) to the lyophilized powder, the clock starts ticking.

Storage Rules for Reconstituted Peptides

  • Always refrigerate at 2–8°C after reconstitution
  • Use within 4–6 weeks for optimal potency
  • Never freeze reconstituted peptides — ice crystals can damage the peptide structure
  • Use bacteriostatic water, not sterile water, as the benzyl alcohol preservative prevents bacterial growth

Reconstitution Best Practices

  1. Clean the vial stopper with an alcohol swab before piercing
  2. Add water slowly — aim the stream at the glass wall, not directly at the powder
  3. Don't shake — gently swirl or roll the vial to mix
  4. Let it sit if the powder doesn't dissolve immediately — some peptides take a few minutes
  5. Label the vial with the date of reconstitution and concentration

Handling Tips

  • Wash your hands or wear gloves when handling vials
  • Use insulin syringes with fine gauge needles (29–31G) for subcutaneous injection
  • Don't touch the needle to any surface before use
  • Dispose of sharps properly in a designated sharps container

Signs of Degradation

Watch for these indicators that a peptide may have degraded:

  • Cloudy solution after reconstitution (should be clear)
  • Particles or floaters in the solution
  • Unusual color — most peptide solutions should be colorless to very faintly yellow
  • Reduced effects despite proper dosing

When in doubt, discard and use a fresh vial. The cost of a replacement is far less than the cost of using a degraded product.
